Christian: I have always loved fashion. However, I saw my first haute couture fashion show when I was at the age of 13 and I was completely amazed. From that moment I knew what I really should do and fell in love with the passion, mystery, luxury that surrounds the fashion universe. N: - What is the experience you want to create for the Christian Westphal wearer? Who is she and where is she going? C: I am creating fashion for women who want to project their confidence in garments that consist of quality and well-done craftsmanship. I don’t see any problem in having a coloured long skirt for an ordinary visit at Café de Flore in Paris or just visiting friends in the countryside. Demonstrating a radically individual style is a way to find trendsetters at a party where high-end fashion is. The garments should wrap like the feathers on a bird, and look amazing for a special occasion or a clubbin′night out with attitude. N: How do you define your own style? How do you express your personal style in your everyday life? C: My collections are far from the “chic porn” of Tom Ford. Several high end brands refocus on their roots to reinvent the “new luxury” based on quality, history and a mastered controlled creativity. We are talking family values, being associated to the fragile nature, money gained by hard work, crafted luxury and art. These universal values are, from my point of view, the new strengths cleared of the bling-bling approach to fashion products. The guideline of our collections are more high-end for urban nomads with noble intentions. The style is Scandinavian minimal, international, fun, intelligent and airy. I have realised that the sharp, precise, discrete and luxurious look is challenging because it demands much more of the fabric, fit and detailing than if the garment is covered with colours, volants, sugar, chocolate and whipped cream! Its also about trawling the intellectual side of the street. N: What is the most beautiful place that you’ve ever travelled to? C: It’s very important to be aware what is happening in the world, and in the streets of Paris, or Tokyo’s Shibuya District, among other places, are full of fashion and new style directions. I recently visited Marrakech in Morocco and fell in love with their mesmerising way of interior design. People that have been in Morocco know that behind the walls are a paradise of colours and scents and impressively made fabrics. The garden of La Maison Bleue, a residence of Mr. Yves Saint Laurent, was a place of serene beauty and peacefulness. N: What is one thing that you can’t leave the house without? C: My iPhone Dora Abodi is one of the most enchanting, magical designers. Each of her collections is like an art deco world of its own. To slip into a Dora Abodi creation is to enter into a fairytale of demi-couture, unusual luxury, and architectural exploration. Born in Transylvania, into a family of artists and raised in Budapest, Dora Abodi showed early interest in fashion and started to draw outfits in her parents’ and grandfather’s studio. She graduated from the French Mod’art International Art and Fashion Academy with honours in 2009 and founded her eponymous brand DORA ABODI in the same year. She has received numerous awards for her work including: Hungarian Fashion Awards Designer of the Year (2010), Glamour Magazine Women of the Year - best designer (2012), and Domus Academy-Vogue Talents Special Awards (2012). From her experimental fashion films to her sculptural swimwear, Nass shares some of the highlights of this young woman’s career. In 2011, Dora Abodi created a capsule swimwear collection for Butterfly, which debuted at the Cosmopolitan Bikini show. Using her fine French tailoring techniques, her Fall 2013 collection (now at Nass) is inspired by the ancient Byzantine era and has been dubbed by fashionistas as creating a ‘modern warrior’ look. Nass is very excited to see more of Ms. Abodi’s creations in her 2014 Spring/Summer collection, which explores the story of a fictitious Louis XIV living in our world today. The solitary hero enjoys marvelous clothes, the joy of discovery, music and dancing. Sounds like its going to make the perfect Nass holiday wear! Everyday Style Interview with S. Nass sits down with everyday style lover S. As a business woman in the food and beverage industry and mother of two, she works and plays hard - and always looks stylish! Nass: Describe your personal style: S: For work I like to be professional - black, white, basic colours - nothing too funky. In everyday life, I used to be more funky. I select what suits my body, my age, my lifestyle. But I still love fashion. N: How do you decide what to wear to a special occasion, like a girls gathering? S: Every Tuesday, we’re the same 7 girls who get together. Sometimes I’m casual, sometimes I’m in heels. N: Do you have different fashion identities? S: Classic is for work. If I’m outside of Kuwait, I’m definitely more open - more free. Society allows me to wear other things that I wouldn’t wear here. N: What is the style of your generation? S: It’s the same as my mother’s generation. Fashion keeps coming back - it’s just different material or brands. The 60s, 70s, 80s keeps coming back. After the crisis with Iraq, we came back to Kuwait in 1990-9,1 it was not as open or free because of what happened. But after 1990, the Kuwaiti mind keeps getting more and more open. In the past two years, you see people wearing sleeveless and short skirts, but not everybody accepts it. N: What shoe best represents who you are? S: I don’t like typical Jimmy Choo, they’re not my favourite. I like to be different because that’s the way I see myself. My favourites are Bottega - black woven leather with round toe heel. N: Who is your biggest fashion inspiration? S: I like JLO a lot, but not everything she wears is my style. My two sisters look up to me. They’re older than me but they ask me for shopping advice. N: What do you carry with you? S: My two phones, my journal, wallet, make-up bag and business cards. Nass introduces Vietnamese brand, Phuong My to the Middle East. The FW13 collection crafts fabric structures and forms that embrace, with rhythm and harmony, the feminine figure of the Orient. We are loving the playful grace in each piece - the way short-sleeved blouses and dresses embrace and reveal the body. Sculpted shoulders, large collars, and cocoon shapes compose artistic forms. Phoung is about statement pieces for the modern woman. One who is at the same time fierce and feminine, bold and delicate. Phuong received her training at the Academy of Art University, San Francisco and since thenhas received prestigious honours including winning the You are Runway Ready Project in NYC (2010) and being presented in ELLE Vietnam (2011). Everyday Style with T. Nass sits down with T., a practically stylish civil engineering student at Kuwait University. Nass: Describe your personal style. T: I like to wear whatever I like. I don’t care what the brand is or what the price is. But if I see 10 people with that Chanel bag, I try not to get that Chanel bag. Whenever something is used a lot by a lot of people, I stay away from it. N: What is your favourite weekend outfit? T:At the chalet I’m in shorts and a t-shirt. And in winter, I’m in a training suit. Fashion is not my number one priority, comfort is. N: Do you have different identities? J: What I wear for university is different than what I wear when I go out. Sometimes I go to university, I don’t care if I put make up on or not. Especially when I have an 8am class - I just throw on jeans and a t-shirt. N: Could you define the style of your generation? J:It’s more punkish, with studs and all. Studs are in now and they were never in ever before. Never did I hear my mom say we wore studs. Through blogs and Instagram, international trends and brands come to Kuwait. And people travel more, so we get more exposure. N: I’ve noticed that Kuwaitis are very fashion conscious. J: People care a lot about how they look. Thankfully, I’ve been raised not to care what people think of my looks. In my family, you are not what you wear or what you drive, but what you do. N: Are you a rebel? T:Sometimes, I really think I am. I wear what I want and I don’t care if it’s in. N: Have you been to NYC? T: Yes! And I liked that when I walked around, people dress however they feel like it. You see people wearing a tank top and Uggs. Weather does not restrict their choices. N: Do you have a dream job? T: I’d like to give back to Kuwait throughout my life. Kuwait has given me everything. It’s my duty to give back. N: What do you never leave the house without? At the young age of 26, Jonathan William Anderson’s breakthrough came in February 2011 in London, when he showed a mod paisley silk pyjama suit as the center piece of his second women’s collection. 2. Prada Pedigree. After graduating from London College of Fashion, Anderson found a job as assistant to stylist Manuela Pavesi at Prada. 3. Every Man. He was selected to be part of Man, a Topman-sponsored lineup of young designers to show a men’s collection inspired by “early 20th-century England and the aristocracy’s fascination with fantastical expeditions.“ 4. B: A roadtrip on the east coast of the US - driving from New York to Philly, DC, Georgia, and ending in New Orleans. N: What is your personal style? B: I dress definitely for my body shape. I think fashion should be fun. I mix timeless pieces with fun stuff. I hate a perfect head to toe one look! N: Who inspires you? B: I love the Olsen twins. I love their style. And I love Scarlett Johansson, because I identify with her body shape. I also love Celina Gomez and Sophia Loren. N: How does being Kuwaiti influence the way you dress? B:I definitely buy a lot more designer stuff. I’m a very lazy shopper. I won’t go look for things. I pick a few stores, go 3 times a year and buy in bulk. If I go to the Avenues, if I’m there for lunch and dinner. And I love shopping in my mama’s closet. I have eclectic taste because I spent most of my life living abroad. N: Where did you grow up? B: Switzerland, Malaysia, Oman, U.S., and Scotland. N: Do you think there is an overlap between fashion and politics? B: I don’t like to be politically incorrect. I don’t wear sleeveless, but that’s culture. Fashion and politics don’t go together in my head. N: If you were handbag, what would you be? B:I’d be a Bottega. It’s timeless and wearable. N: What do you carry with you everyday? Age: 17 Best Summer Holiday Spots: Spain and Switzerland You will know Haya when you see her. She is the girl wearing ripped leggings, platform wedges sprayed with metal spikes, and a t-shirt featuring a rainbow sprinkled glazed donut that can’t help but make you smile. She’s doesn’t think twice about topping off a Carlos Miele gown with a pair of loud high-tops. She wears Balenciaga totes like they’re cupcakes - swapping out flavours and colours according to her mood. She is a 17-year-old, free-spirit fashionista. And she is so much fun to chat with and dress up in Nass. Nass: Describe your personal style. H: Very Tumblr. I get a lot of my looks off Tumblr … like jackets and jeans. If I see a pair of ripped jeans I like, I will rip mine the same way. N: Do you have different identities: H: I like fancy more than casual. And when I’m dressed casual, I wear heals. I break up the look. N: How did you get that way? H: I hate going somewhere and everyone is too dressed up and I’m too casual. Or the opposite. So I like going somewhere in between. N: Define the style of your generation: H: Right now it’s about spikes, ripped leggings, and jewelry on leggings. N: Are you a rebel? H: Sometimes. N: What are you most into at the moment? H: Handbags! They bring out the look of what you’re wearing. I would feel naked if I went out without a bag. N:How many bags do you have? H: [Laughs] I don’t know, probably 10 to 12. But it’s not just the bags, it’s part of my social life. My friends and I bond over the bags we share. When we all have the same bag, one goes out with the red Balenciaga, or the black or the green one - like the one that Nicole Richie wears. (It goes with everything and I can take it anywhere!). We don’t care about wearing the same thing. It shows we’re part of the same fashionista family! N: How do you distinguish yourself from your friends? H: I would say to look as casual as I can so people won’t judge me for how I look. It’s also nice to wear something that makes people wonder. N: What’s your biggest fashion inspiration? H: Spain! I love what they wear. In Marbella - they’re so casual, but it looks so nice. They wear short dresses and just put a flower in their hair and they look great. N: And your biggest fashion disaster? H: OMG. I was in Marbella. A Saudi girl had on the same dress and same shoes. And was the same age and had the same name!!! And people were laughing because they thought we came together. We were both in Zara, this white puffed dress and suede booties. We laughed at each other. And she said hey, “I’m Haya” and I said my name is Haya too. That’s why wearing smaller labels is sometimes a good idea! N: What do you carry with you? H: My bag, my lipstick, my phone, tissues and anything else I need and my wallet. Randa: It was something that came from an early age both for me and Natalia, I never remember starting to get interested in fashion/design it′s something thats always been there since I can remember. N: What is the experience you want to create for the Altewai Saome wearer? Who is she and where is she going? R: Our aim has always been to make the Altewai Saome wearer feel unique and beautiful. The collections are made for women who want to stand out from the crowd, be modern and chic yet feel comfortable in what they′re wearing. Our wearer is always on the go. N: How do you define your own style? How do you express your personal style every day? R: I would describe my style as edgy with a refined simplicity. I believe the best way to express your style is to wear whatever you personally like, feel comfortable and confident in. I usually combine rich/modern with basic or sporty or simply add a nice piece of jewellery to my basic look. N: What is the most beautiful place that you’ve ever traveled to? J: If you asked me that question five years ago, it was really tough. People really weren’t interested in what we offered in terms of modern architecture. Now people seem to be really into being unique, customised, and designing surroundings that can relate to them. As a modern Kuwaiti architect, I have become more desirable and people seem to be trusting me more and more. I’m feeling good about being a Kuwaiti architect. N: Where do you go for inspiration? J: London, Beirut, Milan, Rome, and the Internet. N: I love Beirut! J: Me too, Beirut is one of the most fascinating cities. N: Who is most excited about your style of architecture? J: I am catering to retail, restaurants, spas and shops. Our clients are excited to work with young designers who are well travelled and have an international style. N: What’s your opinion of fashion in Kuwait? J: There are a lot of fashionable people here. They’re international, but also bringing back Kuwaiti fashion with modern designs and cuts. I’m not much of a fashion person. I like things to be simple, clean cut and pleasant on the eye. N: What is your house like? J: At the time it was designed, it was very advanced. Back in the early 80s it was an interesting house. But now I would live in the TFK store. I would love something a bit simpler. I would live here in my office - I hate driving. N: If you were a building what would you be? J: The Gulf Bank of Kuwait - it’s one of my favourites. It has great texture and a proportionate geometry with a skin of concrete. It’s a really true building that I relate to. It’s both delicate and bold. N: Whats your fashion uniform? J: The most comfortable thing, I just put it on. We begin with the story behind our store, answering some of the questions that have been coming in since we opened in Spring 2013. - - - - - - - What was our inspiration for getting started? We have always been interested in fashion. All our lives, we’ve been loyal readers of international fashion magazines and intrigued by the stories behind the designs. We are always looking for new trends and are always up to date. When fashion blogs were born, we read them all! Many bloggers inspired us to look for new designers who had not yet come to Kuwait. Then finally our family and friends encouraged us to turn our love for fashion into a business - and a little later, Nass was born! What is the unique experience we offer Nass shoppers? Nass is first and foremost about the people we know and love, and the new people we get to meet. We create a personalised experience that has at its heart the relationship between Nass and the client. We strive to be more than a store - we are close to people and involved in their everyday lives. What’s behind the name Nass? As most of the stores in Kuwait are in English, we were searching for an Arabic name. We were inspired by the initials of our family members, which came out to spell Nass. This complemented our idea that what we created would not be only about retail, but about the social interactions between people and beautiful design. How do women in Kuwait inspire us to discover new brands from London, NYC, Paris, Brazil, and Copenhagen? Women in Kuwait create their own styles by mixing and matching. They are unique and creative. Women in Kuwait are also extremely fashion conscious and cultured. They know everything! They gave us a big challenge to introduce something new into the market. We knew that we had to find designs that were truly unique, well-tailored, made with beautiful fabrics and were affordable. It has been an exciting challenge to find all of these qualities in our brands. When did we first fall in love with fashion? We grew up around the fashion lives of our moms. When we were little kids, we went to stores with them and we marvelled when they were dressing up and going out. We went to our first fashion show at age 9 in the South of France and we were so wowed! What plans do we have for Nass in the coming months?
